Annual Events

The Horticulture Center strives to establish and increase its programming for students, the Illinois State University community and residents of McLean County as it grows. The following is a schedule of the Center's activities.


Saturday, March 5 Home, Lawn and Garden Day

Sponsored by University of Illinois Extension-McLean County Master Gardeners 

8:00 am – 3:00 pm at Central Catholic in Bloomington

The Center will have an information booth and exhibit. 


Saturday, April 9   Illinois Sustainable Living & Wellness Expo

Sponsored by the Ecology Action Center and Illinois Wesleyan University

Saturday 9:00 — 4:00 pm Shirk Center, IWU

The Center will have an information booth and exhibit.


Thursday, April 14   Make and Take – Fairy Homes

Get your garden ready for those smallest of visitors by building your very own Fairy Garden Home.  This is a wonderful activity for parent and child. All materials provided. 6:00 - 8:00 pm Registration is required. Fee is $35.


Thursday, April 28 Make and Take – May Day Baskets

When you were a child did you ever make a May Day basket? Make 3 baskets to place on your favorite neighbors' doors. We supply everything you need: fresh flowers, candy, seed packets, and materials to make your baskets. 6:00 - 8:00 pm Registration is required. Fee is $35; $40 for premade baskets.

The Horticulture Center celebrates all the trees that have been sponsored.

Make sure to wear your gardening clothes!

9:00 – 10:30 am

Thursday, June 30   ISU Night at the Cornbelters

Come join us in a pregame dinner, grab your hamburger while touring the gardens.

Reservations required.

Monday, July 4        The 4th at the Hort

A private Independence Celebration for Friends of the Center, Volunteers and Staff         



Saturday, August 13    Make and Take – Pressing Flowers

Learn how to select how to select and press flowers as well as as diferent foliar plants.You will create your own press and then collect samples at the Horticulture Center. 9:00 - 11:00 pm Registration is required. Fee is $35.


Thursday, August 18  A Nocturnal Garden – Discovering the beauty of the night.

Discover the beauty of the night as you learn about plants that add a glamorous appeal to the garden.  Learn about the insects that inhabit the night. Have a s’more and go on a moon walk around the Center’s prairie. An entrance fee is charged.


Sept 17     Autumnal Festival

Join us for our one and only fundraiser with your family at our annual Autumnal Festival!

Enjoy family activities, purchase your homegrown pumpkins and gourds, get lost in our corn maze and take a hay ride.

Enter and/or purchase your favorite scarecrow in our 9th annual Scarecrows on Parade.

If fall decorating is something you love to do enter and/or purchase a fall flower container.                          

Thursday, October 6th Make and Take – Pumpkin Arrangement

                  Create an autumnal masterpiece for your home.  Registration is required.  Fee is $35 for the class; $40 for premade arrangements.


Nov TBA     Volunteer Celebration

A private celebration for Volunteers and Staff.

Thursday, November 17th   Make and Take – Holiday Wreath or Basket Arrangement & Ugly Holiday Corsage

Make your holiday wreath or basket arrangement with fresh greens from our very own Nick Pershey’s Christmas Tree Farm. Then while sipping hot cocoa make your “ugly holiday corsage” to give as a hostess present or to show-off at your own holiday party.  Registration is required.  Fee is $35 for the class; $40 for premade wreaths or baskets.
